This photographic essay examines the two aspects the Ozark region is famous for: its sublime natural beauty and its conservative folk culture. Leland Payton finds something of value in each. There are mist-filled photographs of scenic valleys and pictures of the spring-fed rivers' scaly inhabitants. The people of the region are lovingly portrayed, but not idealized. Payton interweaves personal experience, extensive knowledge of local history, readings in frontier travel journals and natural history to create a fresh and original look at one of America's fabled regions. Flyfisher's Guide to Montana This comprehensive wine atlas leaves no centimeter of terroir unexplored. After a thorough introduction to France, French winemaking and the concept of terroir, Jefford (Wine Tastes Wine Styles) gets to the heart of the matter with lengthy chapters on each of France's 14 regions. Each of these consists of an overview of the region and its history, profiles of the area's major winemakers, a description of the land and listings and descriptions of the local wineries. Some of the latter are lengthy, while others are brief, but all include an address and phone number, making this book useful as a guidebook as well. Jefford is refreshingly opinionated: the Loire Valley is in the throes of a "long and refined stone age," while Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace is the domain "most emblematic of the New France as a whole." The effort here is encyclopedic, but the writing rises above the usual dry discussion, comparing the quest to understand Burgundy to doing crossword puzzles. Even the most matter-of-fact information is presented with a certain flair: in a description of the Rhone Valley, Jefford explains that the area's mistral wind is both destructive and useful, in that it blows away "fugs and fungal diseases." Numerous maps and photographs-including portraits of the winemakers profiled-and a full list of vintages round out this entertaining addition to its field. The Heartland: Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, and North Dakota (National Geographic's Driving Guides to America Series) Guide to Cruising Chesapeake Bay California's missions were built by Spanish padres over 150 years ago, and this book tells the history of each, along with photographs of the adobe architecture, bright gardens, rustic interiors, and artistic flourishes. A classic guide to 21 missions, this beautifully illustrated volume is now revised and updated. 160 color photos. This is a second edition of the successful study of Finland in the English language. A Short History of Finland traces the historical development of the country from its settlement by the Finns in the first millennium AD to the present time, exploring Finland's earlier connection with Sweden, the complex relationship with Russia that has dominated Finnish history in the past two centuries, and the postwar achievements of the second republic. This second edition has been revised and updated by Emeritus Professor A. F. Upton, a leading scholar of Scandinavian history. It covers the impact of the break-up of the Soviet Union and brings events up to Finland's admission to the European Union in 1995. Just as modern Scandinavian architecture captivates with its elegance and high quality so too does its landscape architecture. During the last century Danish and Swedish landscape architecture was amongst the European avant garde, and in more recent years, the development in Scandinavia along with Spain, the Netherlands and France has captured our interest once again. A new generation of designers has been responsible for creating landscape architectures which met with international praise, and the names Sn°hetta, Thorbj÷rn Andersson, Stig L. Andersson, Steen H°yer und Preben Skaarup are now known far beyond the borders of Scandinavia. Featuring examples from Topos which include the harbour area in Copenhagen, new squares in Bergen, the redesigning of the railway station area in Jordro/Haninge, and avalanche protection in Iceland, this volume provides an overview of Scandinavia's contribution to the design of new parks, squares and landscapes. Cycling the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg leads cyclists through these extremely bicycle friendly countries on two wheels. The routes meander along canals, past windmills, through rolling hills and quaint villages. Included is information on weather, terrain, sightseeing, rentals plus practical information on places to stay and eat. Daytrips Germany has been expanded to reflect the growing importance of Berlin and the emerging East. This edition is illustrated with the generous use of full color photos, and more maps than any other guidebook. The Icelandic Tourist Board has reported a steady increase in visitors from North America, and the handsome photographs in this book help explain why. Baxter, whose landscape photographs have been seen in countless travel books (e.g., Portrait of Scotland; Glasgow Pocket Guide), calendars, and postcards, here provides dramatic color shots revealing lunarlike landscapes, glacial lagoons, rugged coastlines, and crystal-clear air you can almost inhale from the pages. Unfortunately, both the short introduction by Cathy Harlow and the "Information About Iceland" section read like tourist board business promotions, heavy on geology and the limitations of the Icelandic economy. Brief captions identify (in Icelandic) what you are looking at but do not elaborate. Is the church in the photograph of historic interest? What can a visitor enjoy at the Bustarfell Folk Museum? The Insight Guide Iceland, now in its third edition, includes excellent photographs as well as solid travel advice and would be a more useful purchase for libraries serving potential travelers. For large travel collections only. Linda M. Kaufmann, Massachusetts Coll. of Liberal Arts Lib., North Adams With complete coverage of the most beautiful historic towns and villages, notes on entertainment in Budapest, and information on traveling between cities, this completely updated and revised edition is indispensable for all travelers. The book includes a comprehensive language section and glossary. color. 80 maps. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The first Irish photographs date from 1840. In the century that followed, Ireland was to know tragedy and triumph, bitter struggle and agonized compromise. Much of that experience, now remote, is brought to life here in images so powerful that they remind one of the miracle that photography once seemed.Ireland in 1840 was a subject nation. Its predominantly Catholic, Gaelic-speaking people were ruled from Westminster by a parliament that was largely Protestant, British, and drawn from a narrow land-owning elite. In the 1840s, photography in Ireland was the genteel hobby of the leisured Anglo-Irish landed class. The well-to-do subjects of the daguerrotype portraits of the 1840s peer with bemused expressions toward the mysterious contraption in front of them. It is a shock to realize that many such images were taken as the Irish starved: between 1846 and 1851, over a million poor people died in the Great Famine, while an even greater number emigrated. In the following decades, Irish political life was dominated by the struggle for land rights, for Home Rule, and finally for independence. As that story unfolds in this enthralling visual history, we encounter inspirational leaders and impatient rebels, and their campaigns of persuasion and violence. We see too the injustices that inspired them, above all the mass eviction of destitute peasants from their homes and lands. And we see how the march of Irish nationalism was thwarted not only by British resistance but also by militant UnionismŚthe equally passionate desire of Ulster Protestants to remain part of the United Kingdom. Yet these images do more than tell a gripping political story. They give an insight into a people, a landscape, and a lost way of life. They capture the hard labor of rural survival: cutting peat for fuel, gathering seaweed, fishing, and tilling the soil, against the magnificence of the often-harsh Irish landscape. And they show the grandeur, elegance, and complacency of life in the Big House, home and symbol of the doomed Anglo-Irish elite. 271 photographs in color and duotone 450 color photographs, this book is the most comprehensive guide to the Lighthouses of Maine. Each lighthouse is pictured from a variety of angles, giving you a thorough tour of each location I really enjoyed Italian in 10 minutes a day. It is well laid out, and fun to study. Photographing the Southwest: Volume 2--A Guide to the Natural Landmarks of Arizona & New Mexico
For most people, today's Florida means palm trees, beaches and a big Mouse, but there's another, more timeless Florida; of century old inns with winding staircases and elaborate gardens; of forests of live oak, pine, and palmetto, where the only sounds to be heard are the crickets and the wind. Come travel the backroads of the Sunshine State with David Warner where you'll meet famous characters and find wonderful new places to see, and important new evetns to understand. Travel book Arkansas A Guide to Backcountry Travel & Adventure, by Bryan Hendricks, is in my opinion, the best source for information about outdoor activities in Arkansas currently available. I have read several titles that have promised useful information on this subject, but Mr. Hendricks' book has got the most complete listings of places to go and things to do in the most reader-friendly format of any of my previous purchases. I have 3 young children, and accurate information is vital to me when it comes to planning a trip. This book lets me know exactly what to expect when I'm considering a weekend jaunt with my family. Nothing can ruin an otherwise nice outing for me more than getting to a place and finding it totally different than it has been described to me. I have already been to several of the recreation areas mentioned in this book, and have found the author's assessments to be right on track. Therefore, I feel like I can trust Mr. Hendricks' observations when I am planning future excursions with my family. Arkansas A Guide to Backcountry Travel & Adventure, published by Out There Press, covers every region of the state in an easy-to-use layout, complete with locations, maps, activities permitted, contact information, ranger station locations, and also gives you names of businesses in the immediate area which may be of use while on an outing. Everything is easy to understand, with emphasis placed on hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing, and my personal favorite, mountain biking. It is so hard to get accurate information on what is permitted, and when and where, that the contacts included with the book will make it a valuable refernce for years to come. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to find outdoor activities in Arkansas, as I feel there is not a single wasted page between its covers. The White Mountains: A Photographic Portrait presents images that show what the perceptive visitor to the area can see, on the back roads and well-hiked trails. View them with the same enthusiasm and excitement experienced by the photographers visiting the area, who were prompted to record their memories on film. In DAY HIKES FROM THE RIVER SECOND EDITION, author, hiker and river runner Tom Martin offers river runners through Grand Canyon National Park a new text on exploring Grand Canyon National Park from the Colorado River.
